1/2 cup warm water (100°F to 110°F)
1 (1/4-oz.) pkg. active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp.)
1 tsp. plus 3 Tbsp. granulated sugar

5 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. table salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup cold salted butter
cubed
1/2 cup shortening
cubed
2 cups whole buttermilk
1/4 cup butter
melted and divided
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, remaining sugar, salt, and baking soda.
- Cut in the cold butter and shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the yeast mixture and buttermilk until just combined.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times before rolling it out to 1/2 inch thick.
- Cut out biscuits using a biscuit cutter and place them on a baking sheet.
- Brush the tops with melted butter and bake at 400°F for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can add herbs or cheese to the dough before baking. Ensure the buttermilk is at room temperature for better results.
