Description
A deliciously crispy and flavorful Blooming Onion served with a zesty dipping sauce, perfect for parties and gatherings.
Ingredients
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons cream-style horseradish sauce
2 ¼ teaspoons ketchup
¼ teaspoon paprika
¼ teaspoon salt
1 pinch ground black pepper
1 pinch cayenne pepper
1 cup milk
1 egg
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons salt
1 ½ teaspoons cayenne pepper
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon dried thyme
¼ teaspoon dried oregano
⅛ teaspoon ground cumin
1 large onion
2 quarts vegetable oil for deep-frying
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix together the dipping sauce ingredients: mayonnaise, horseradish sauce, ketchup, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Set aside.
- In another bowl, combine milk and egg. Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper, garlic powder, thyme, oregano, and cumin.
- Prepare the onion by cutting it into petals without cutting through the base. Soak the onion in the milk and egg mixture for 20 minutes.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan to 375°F (190°C).
- Remove the onion from the milk mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge the onion in the flour mixture, ensuring it coats well.
- Carefully place the coated onion into the hot oil and fry for about 3-5 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from oil, drain on paper towels, and serve hot with dipping sauce.
Notes
Make sure the oil is hot enough for a crispy texture. You can adjust the level of spices based on your heat preference.
