Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine bread flour with yeast, salt, and sugar.
- Gradually add warm water and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and punch down the risen dough.
- Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each into a long strand.
- Braid the strands together and place the braided loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Brush the top with egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds if desired.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving warm with butter.
Notes
For a kosher version, skip the butter and use water for the egg wash.
