Ingredients
6 cups day-old bread
cubed (French bread
brioche
or challah work wonderfully)
3 large eggs
room temperature
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy whipping cream (you can use half-and-half as a less rich alternative)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar
packed
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
melted
1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
- Add the cubed bread to the mixture, gently folding until all the pieces are soaked.
- If using, stir in the raisins or dried cranberries.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and drizzle the melted butter over the top.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until the custard is set and the top is lightly golden brown.
- Let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature!
Notes
For a richer flavor, feel free to swap in some bourbon or rum into the custard mixture. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven.
