8 ounces cream cheese

softened

1/4 cup powdered sugar

1 egg (for egg wash)

Optional: Zest of 1 lemon for added flavor


Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, salt, and active dry yeast.
  • Warm the milk and whisk in the eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract before adding to the dry ingredients.
  • Knead the dough until smooth, then cover and let it rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  • Meanwhile, beat the cream cheese and powdered sugar together until smooth, adding lemon zest if desired.
  • Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle, spread the cream cheese mixture on top, and roll it up tightly.
  • Twist and braid the rolled dough, then place it in a loaf pan.
  • Let the bread rise again for about 30 minutes, brush with an egg wash, and bake it in a preheated oven at 350°F for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Allow the babka to cool before slicing and serving.

Notes
