This Fried Cornbread is a delightful Southern treat, perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It’s a great side dish for any meal.
Ingredients

1 ½ cup cornmeal
½ cup self-rising flour
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
1 ½ teaspoon kosher salt
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
1 cup buttermilk
1 large egg
½ cup vegetable oil divided
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, self-rising flour, baking powder, kosher salt, and granulated sugar.
- In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and ¼ cup of vegetable oil until well blended.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined; do not overmix.
- Heat the remaining ¼ cup of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Spoon the cornbread batter into the hot oil in the skillet, forming small patties. Fry until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes each side.
- Remove the fried cornbread from the skillet and drain on paper towels.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
For a twist, add chopped jalapeños or cheese to the batter before frying.
