Ingredients

Scale

1 pound ground beef

1 pound Italian sausage

casings removed

1 medium onion

diced

3 cloves garlic

minced

1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper

to taste

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

3 cups whole milk

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly grated

if possible)

Salt and pepper

to taste

12 lasagna noodles (oven-ready or cooked)

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 cup fresh parsley

chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add diced onion and minced garlic, sauté until softened.
  • Add ground beef and Italian sausage to the skillet, breaking the meat apart as it cooks. Cook until browned.
  • Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Meanwhile, prepare the béchamel sauce. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  • Gradually add milk while whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens. Season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Assemble the lasagna by layering meat sauce, noodles, béchamel, and cheeses in a baking dish until all ingredients are used.
  • Top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

For a vegetarian option, you can replace the meat with sautéed vegetables such as mushrooms and spinach.
