Description

A quick and easy Irish soda bread recipe made with flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk. Crusty outside, soft inside, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (500 g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 ¾ cups (420 ml) buttermilk

  • Optional: 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons melted butter, ½ cup raisins or currants, 1 tablespoon caraway seeds

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a baking sheet or skillet.

  • Mix flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Add sugar or seeds if using.

  • Make a well in the center and pour in buttermilk. Stir gently until dough forms.

  • Turn dough onto a floured surface, knead lightly 4–5 times, and shape into a round.

  • Place on baking sheet. Cut a deep cross on top.

  • Bake 30–35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.

  • Cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • Do not overmix; it makes the loaf dense.

  • Use whole wheat flour for a heartier version.

  • Bread is best eaten fresh but can be frozen.
