-
4 cups (500 g) all-purpose flour
-
1 teaspoon baking soda
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
1 ¾ cups (420 ml) buttermilk
-
Optional: 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons melted butter, ½ cup raisins or currants, 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
Instructions

Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a baking sheet or skillet.
-
Mix flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Add sugar or seeds if using.
-
Make a well in the center and pour in buttermilk. Stir gently until dough forms.
-
Turn dough onto a floured surface, knead lightly 4–5 times, and shape into a round.
-
Place on baking sheet. Cut a deep cross on top.
-
Bake 30–35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
-
Cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
Notes
-
Do not overmix; it makes the loaf dense.
-
Use whole wheat flour for a heartier version.
-
Bread is best eaten fresh but can be frozen.
