Ingredients
-
4 large eggs, separated (room temperature)
-
1 cup white granulated sugar
-
½ cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
-
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
-
1 cup all-purpose flour
-
2 cups lukewarm milk
-
Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 320°F (160°C). Grease an 8×8-inch (20×20 cm) baking dish and line with parchment paper if desired.
-
Separate egg yolks and whites into two bowls.
-
Whisk egg yolks with sugar until pale and creamy.
-
Add melted butter and vanilla extract; mix well.
-
Slowly pour in milk while whisking continuously.
-
Sift in flour and mix until smooth and lump-free.
-
Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
-
Gently fold egg whites into the batter in 3 additions. The batter will be thin—this is normal.
-
Pour batter into prepared dish and bake for 45–50 minutes, until the top is lightly golden and set.
-
Cool completely, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before slicing.
-
Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
-
Do not overmix after folding in egg whites to preserve the layers.
-
Chill before slicing for clean, defined layers.
-
Best served slightly chilled or at room temperature.
