Old-Fashioned Date Squares are a delightful blend of sweetness and texture, combining a rich date filling with a buttery oat crust that makes for a nostalgic treat perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients

2 cups chopped pitted dates
¾ cup water
⅓ cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1¾ cups rolled oats
1½ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter
softened
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine chopped dates, water, white sugar, and vanilla extract. Cook over medium heat until the dates are soft and the mixture is thickened, stirring frequently.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
- Add softened butter to the dry ingredients and mix until crumbly.
- Press half of the oat mixture into the bottom of a greased 9×9 inch baking pan.
- Spread the date filling evenly over the pressed oat mixture in the pan.
- Crumble the remaining oat mixture on top of the date filling.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until lightly browned. Allow to cool before cutting into squares.
Notes
These date squares can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for several days.
