2 tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon shortening
1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
¼ cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
6 cups bread flour

Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it stand for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, sugar, salt, and shortening until the mixture is warm but not boiling. Remove from heat.
- Combine the warm milk mixture and the yeast mixture in a large bowl.
- Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal pieces. Shape each piece into a loaf and place them in greased loaf pans.
- Cover the pans with a cloth and let the loaves rise until doubled, about 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the loaves for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from oven and let cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
For a richer flavor, consider using whole milk. Ensure your yeast is fresh for the best rise.
