Ingredients
2 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes (thinly sliced)
1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
3 garlic cloves (minced)
4 tbsp butter
3 tbsp all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
3 cups milk
1 cup heavy cream
2 cups shredded cheese (Cheddar
Gruyère
or blend)
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp paprika (optional
for garnish)
Fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a skillet, melt 4 tbsp of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and minced garlic, sauté until soft and fragrant.
- Stir in the flour (or cornstarch) and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and cream, then bring the mixture to a simmer until it thickens. Stir in 1.5 cups of cheese, salt, pepper, and paprika.
- In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the creamy sauce, and half of the remaining cheese. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and sauce, topping with the last 0.5 cup of cheese.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
- Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with cornstarch. You can experiment with different cheese combinations for varied flavor.
