Description

Delicious homemade Apple Hand Pies filled with tart Granny Smith apples, sugar, and spices, encased in flaky pie crusts.


Ingredients

  • 2 large Granny Smith apples (about 1 lb.)
  • peeled and diced
  • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 Tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 2 unbaked pie crusts
  • rolled into two 12-inch circles
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons milk

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples, sugar, brown sugar, salt, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook until the apples have softened, about 10 minutes.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the pie crusts on a floured surface and cut out circles using a 5-inch cutter.
  3. Place a spoonful of the apple mixture in the center of each crust circle. Fold the crust over to create a half-moon shape and seal the edges by crimping with a fork.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk the egg with milk to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of the hand pies with the egg wash.
  5. Place the pies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Feel free to add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side for an extra treat!
