Ingredients

  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie shell
  • 4 large egg whites
  • ¼ cup white sugar

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together 2 cups white sugar, 5 tablespoons cocoa powder, and ¼ cup flour.
  2. Slowly mix in the evaporated milk and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened.
  3. Remove from heat and add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 4 egg yolks, and ¼ cup butter. Stir until smooth.
  4. Pour the chocolate filling into the unbaked pie shell.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat 4 egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add ¼ cup white sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
  6. Spread the meringue over the pie filling, sealing the edges.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes, or until the meringue is golden brown.
