Description

These Chicken Philly Cheese Steaks are a delicious twist on the classic sandwich, featuring tender chicken, sautéed onions, and vibrant peppers, all topped with melty provolone cheese.


Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs boneless
  • skinless chicken breasts (or thighs)
  • thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • divided (plus more as needed)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • thinly sliced
  • 2 bell peppers (green and red)
  • thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning (optional)
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • plus more to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 68 slices provolone (or white American)
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • split (lightly toasted optional)
  • Optional spreads: garlic-herb mayo
  • Dijon
  • or a pat of butter

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sliced chicken with Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat evenly.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the remaining olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until they begin to soften, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the bell peppers and garlic to the skillet and sauté until the vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add the seasoned chicken to the skillet and cook until the chicken is cooked through, about 8-10 minutes.
  5. Stir in Italian seasoning if using, and taste to adjust seasoning as needed.
  6. Place provolone slices on top of the chicken mixture and cover the skillet with a lid until the cheese melts, about 2-3 minutes.
  7. Serve the chicken and cheese mixture in toasted hoagie rolls and add optional spreads if desired.
