Description
Chocolate glazed donuts are light, fluffy homemade donuts topped with a smooth, glossy cocoa glaze. They can be fried for a classic bakery-style texture or baked for a lighter option.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
- ½ tsp salt
- ¾ cup warm milk
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg, beaten
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Chocolate Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2–3 tbsp milk
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tsp corn syrup, optional
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- Warm the milk slightly and melt the butter. Add the milk, melted butter, and beaten egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 5–8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about ½-inch thickness. Cut into donut shapes using a donut cutter or two round cutters.
- Place the donuts on a lined baking sheet and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
- For fried donuts, heat about 2 inches of oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry 2–3 donuts at a time for 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
- For baked donuts, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the donuts in a lightly greased donut pan and bake for 10–12 minutes, until lightly golden and firm.
- To make the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, vanilla, and salt until smooth and glossy. Add a little more milk if needed.
- Let the donuts cool slightly, then dip the top of each donut into the chocolate glaze. Allow excess glaze to drip off and place the donuts on a wire rack to set.
- Add sprinkles, chopped nuts, coconut, or chocolate shavings before the glaze sets, if desired.
Notes
- Keep the oil close to 350°F (175°C) for evenly cooked fried donuts.
- Let the donuts cool slightly before glazing so the glaze coats evenly.
- For a softer, shinier glaze, add 1 teaspoon of corn syrup.
- Store glazed donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
- For longer storage, freeze the donuts without glaze and glaze them after thawing.
- For a lighter version, bake the donuts instead of frying.
- For gluten-free donuts, use a suitable gluten-free all-purpose flour blend.
- For vegan donuts, use plant-based milk and butter and replace the egg with a flax egg.
