Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups (312 grams) all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup (25 grams) unsweetened cocoa powder
- preferably Dutch-processed
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups (400 grams) granulated sugar
- 1 cup (240 ml) vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- room temperature
- 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk
- room temperature
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon black gel food coloring
- 8 ounces (226 grams) cream cheese
- softened
- ½ cup (113 grams) unsalted butter
- softened
- 3 cups (360 grams) powdered sugar
- sifted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk or cream
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, combine sugar and oil, then add eggs, buttermilk, vanilla extract, vinegar, and black gel food coloring. Mix well.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat the softened cream cheese and butter in a bowl until smooth. Gradually add in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until creamy.
- Add milk or cream, one tablespoon at a time, until the desired frosting consistency is achieved.
- Once the cakes are completely cool, frost the top of one layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the cake.
- To create a spiderweb design, pipe icing in circles outward from the center and then drag a toothpick or knife from the center to the edge, creating a web effect.
Notes
Ensure your eggs and buttermilk are at room temperature for best results. Feel free to use dairy-free substitutes for a vegan version.
