- 3 large eggs
- 1¼ cups milk
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar, lightly packed
- ½ tablespoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Crumble Topping
- ½ tablespoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ cup brown sugar, lightly packed
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons butter
Optional Toppings
- 2 tablespoons chopped hazelnuts, almonds, or walnuts
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
- Maple syrup, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a medium baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- Place the cubed bread into the baking dish and drizzle with melted butter.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Gently press the bread down so it absorbs the liquid.
- Let the mixture sit for 10–15 minutes.
- In a small bowl, combine cinnamon, brown sugar, flour, and butter until crumbly.
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the casserole. Add chopped nuts if desired.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes or until golden brown and set in the center.
- Cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup if desired.
Notes
- Colomba bread gives a traditional Easter flavor, but brioche or croissants work beautifully.
- For a savory version, omit the sugar and cinnamon and add cheese, spinach, or cooked sausage.
- This casserole can be assembled the night before and refrigerated overnight.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
