Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box
  • usually eggs
  • oil
  • and water)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (optional)
  • 1 cup vanilla frosting (store-bought or homemade vanilla buttercream)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • browned
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • sifted
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 23 tablespoons whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • White candy melts or white chocolate for football laces (melted)
  • Wooden cake pop sticks
  • Optional: sprinkles or edible glitter for decoration

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to package instructions. Bake the cake and let it cool completely.
  2. Crumble the cooled cake into a large bowl and mix in chocolate chips if using.
  3. Form the cake mixture into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter, and place them on a baking sheet. Freeze for at least 30 minutes.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the browned butter, vanilla frosting, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, vanilla extract, and salt to make the brown butter frosting.
  5. Dip the end of a wooden stick into the brown butter frosting, then insert the stick into each cake ball. This helps hold the stick in place.
  6. Coat each cake pop in brown butter frosting, allowing excess to drip off.
  7. Melt white candy melts or white chocolate and drizzle over the cake pops to create football laces.
  8. Decorate with optional sprinkles or edible glitter if desired.
  9. Let the cake pops set before serving.

Notes

These cake pops can be made a day in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. For a fun twist, feel free to use different colored candy melts for personalization.
