- 2 & 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- spooned and leveled
- 1 & 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup buttermilk**

- 1/2 cup cold butter
- chopped into chunks
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- granulated or raw sugar or both
- vanilla ice cream

Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with lemon zest, lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, salt, and vanilla extract. Toss until apples are well coated.
- Transfer the apple mixture into a greased baking dish and spread it evenly.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Add the buttermilk, egg, and cold butter. Mix until combined but do not overmix.
- Drop spoonfuls of the cobbler topping over the apple filling, covering as much of the filling as possible.
- Sprinkle the topping with additional sugar.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
For a cheater version of buttermilk, mix 1/2 cup regular milk with 1/2 tablespoon of vinegar and let it sit for 5 minutes. If you prefer to cook the apples first, sauté them with the sugars and spices for about 5 minutes before adding to the baking dish.
