Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups (228g) all purpose flour
  • 2 cups (414g) sugar
  • 3/4 cup (85g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (240ml) milk
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) hot water
  • 2 cups (448g) unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 1/4 cups (350g) peanut butter
  • 9 cups (1035g) powdered sugar
  • 67 tbsp (90-105ml) water (or milk)
  • 6 Reese’s peanut butter cups (chopped)
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 6 oz (1 cup) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy whipping cream
  • 4 Reese’s peanut butter cups (cut in half)
  • crumbled Reese’s peanut butter cups

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and eggs to the dry ingredients, mixing until combined.
  4. Gradually stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. While the cakes cool, prepare the peanut butter frosting by beating the butter and peanut butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar and water, mixing until smooth.
  7. Once the cakes are cooled, spread a layer of peanut butter frosting between the cakes, then frost the top and sides of the cake.
  8. For the ganache, heat the heavy cream in a saucepan until just simmering, then pour over chocolate chips in a bowl, stirring until melted and smooth.
  9. Drizzle the chocolate ganache over the frosted cake, then decorate with halved Reese’s peanut butter cups and crumbled pieces.

Notes

Make sure your ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing. Use a toothpick to check the doneness of the cakes when baking.
