Deliciously creamy and cheesy, Potatoes Au Gratin features thinly sliced russet potatoes baked to golden perfection in a rich, savory sauce.

- 4 tablespoons softened unsalted butter divided
- 3 pounds (4 or 5 medium) russet potatoes peeled
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup shredded white cheddar cheese
- 6 tablespoons grated Parmesan divided
- 3 garlic cloves minced
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Grease a baking dish with 2 tablespoons of softened butter.
- Thinly slice the peeled russet potatoes and set aside.
- In a saucepan, combine heavy cream, minced garlic, salt, and pepper over medium heat until warm but not boiling.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the greased baking dish. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle with half of the cheddar and half of the Parmesan cheese.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, cream, cheddar, and Parmesan.
- Dot the top with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding cooked bacon or chopped herbs to the layers of potatoes.
