Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter at room temperature
  • 2 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 4 large egg whites at room temperature
  • 1 cup buttermilk at room temperature
  • 3 cups cake flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Red food coloring
  • Blue food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add vanilla extract, then add eggs and egg whites, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Stir in the buttermilk until well combined.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together cake flour, baking powder, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  7. Divide the batter into three bowls. Color one portion with red food coloring, the second portion with blue food coloring, and leave the third plain.
  8. Spoon alternating dollops of each colored batter into the prepared pans to create a marbled effect.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
