- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

- 4 large egg whites at room temperature
- 1 cup buttermilk at room temperature
- 3 cups cake flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Red food coloring
- Blue food coloring
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add vanilla extract, then add eggs and egg whites, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Stir in the buttermilk until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together cake flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter into three bowls. Color one portion with red food coloring, the second portion with blue food coloring, and leave the third plain.
- Spoon alternating dollops of each colored batter into the prepared pans to create a marbled effect.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
