  • 1 cup sourdough starter discard (unfed)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • about ¼ cup sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon cinnamon (for coating)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter discard, all-purpose flour, sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt until well mixed.
  2. Knead the dough lightly until smooth, then let it rest for 10 minutes.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. Roll the dough out on a floured surface to about ½ inch thick, then cut it into strips.
  5. Twist each strip and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Brush the twists with melted butter and apply the egg wash.
  7. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture generously over each twist.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For an extra kick, consider adding chopped nuts or raisins into the dough. These twists are best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a couple of days.
