  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (112g) unsalted butter
  • room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups (310g) sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk*
  • 5 oz bittersweet chocolate (60% cacao)
  • chopped**
  • Black gel icing color
  • Red gel icing color
  • 2 1/4 cups (504g) unsalted butter
  • 8 cups (920g) powdered sugar
  • 1 cup (114g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 57 tbsp (75-105ml) water/cream
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 4 oz red Wilton candy melts
  • 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • Sprinkles (see notes)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the unsalted butter, vegetable oil, and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add vanilla extract and eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Mix in the buttermilk until fully combined.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  7. Divide the batter into two bowls. Melt the chopped bittersweet chocolate and mix it into one bowl of batter.
  8. In the greased cake pans, alternate spooning the vanilla and chocolate batters, creating a marbled effect.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow cakes to cool completely.
  10. For the chocolate buttercream, beat the unsalted butter until creamy, then gradually mix in powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Add vanilla extract, salt, and enough water/cream to achieve desired consistency.
  11. Once the cakes have cooled, frost the first layer with chocolate buttercream, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides.
  12. To make the red drip, melt the red candy melts with heavy whipping cream until smooth. Drizzle over the top of the cake.
  13. Decorate with sprinkles and additional gel colors if desired for a spooky effect.

Notes

For a richer flavor, let the buttermilk sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before using. Adjust the consistency of the buttercream with more water or cream as needed.
