- 1 and ½ tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 and ¼ cups water (divided)
- ½ cup granulated white sugar
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
- ¼ cup rice vinegar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon tomato ketchup
- 2 teaspoons sambal oelek
- 1 tablespoon fish sauce
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix ½ cup of water with cornstarch until dissolved and set aside.
- In a saucepan, combine the remaining water, sugar, minced garlic, red pepper flakes, rice vinegar, salt, ketchup, sambal oelek, and fish sauce. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and stir in the cornstarch mixture. Keep stirring until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool before transferring to a bottle or container for storage.
Notes
For a milder sauce, reduce the amount of red pepper flakes and sambal oelek. This sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
