- 1¾ cups +2 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 tablespoon lemon zest
- 2½ tablespoons granulated sugar
- ¼ cup lukewarm milk
- 1½ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup butter
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, lemon zest, and sugar.
- Add the yeast mixture, slightly beaten eggs, and softened butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until the dough forms.
- Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a braided loaf, placing it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Make an egg wash by whisking together the egg and water, then brush it over the braid.
- If using, place colorful eggs on and around the loaf.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool before slicing.
Notes
For a richer flavor, consider using unsalted butter and adjusting the salt accordingly. This bread is traditionally enjoyed during Easter but is delightful any time of the year.
