Description

Traditional Italian Easter Bread is a soft, sweet brioche adorned with colorful eggs, perfect for celebrating the holiday.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1¾ cups +2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 2½ tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup lukewarm milk
  • 1½ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, lemon zest, and sugar.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, slightly beaten eggs, and softened butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until the dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a braided loaf, placing it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Make an egg wash by whisking together the egg and water, then brush it over the braid.
  9. If using, place colorful eggs on and around the loaf.
  10. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool before slicing.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider using unsalted butter and adjusting the salt accordingly. This bread is traditionally enjoyed during Easter but is delightful any time of the year.
