Ingredients
Scale
- 2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- ½ cup warm water (100 to 110 degrees F/40 to 45 degrees C)
- ¾ cup milk
- ⅓ cup vegetable shortening
- ¼ cup white sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying
- 1 tablespoon warm water
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
- sifted
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and 1 teaspoon of white sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, combine the milk, vegetable shortening, ¼ cup sugar, and salt. Stir in the yeast mixture and eggs.
- Gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ½ inch thick. Cut into doughnut shapes with a doughnut cutter.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Fry the doughnuts until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Drain on paper towels. In a bowl, combine 1 tablespoon warm water, vanilla extract, and confectioners’ sugar to make a glaze. Dip cooled doughnuts in the glaze.
Notes
Make sure the oil temperature is correct to achieve perfectly fried doughnuts. They can be topped with various glazes or sprinkles as desired.
